I met Ed Grazda in 1969 and began hanging out with the Bleecker Street Irregulars. Thanks to them I've spent most of my adult life exploring the world on a "hard seat" budget. They launched me on this path of using Leica rangefinders to record light on black and white film. My cartoonist father and painter mother were supportive, perhaps recognizing the same creative imperative that led them to spend their own lives in the Arts, being reflected forward.
In a world of distraction, photography keeps my eyes open and focused on what's important. Decades in, I'm happily based in the documentary tradition of finding mystery and goodness in life as it reveals itself when one pays attention. I could not have made these images of unlikely destinations, remarkable people and diverse cultures, without inspiring teachers, good friends and the bedrock foundation of a loving family.
As Bob Dylan says:
I've got nothin' but affection for all those who've sailed with me...
