Telluride Film Festival
Other Minds

My experience with the Telluride Film Festival goes back to 1974.  The relationship changed many times but for fourteen years (including the final nine years of Bill and Stella Pence's thirty-three year direction of the festival, and the first years of what followed their departure) I had the honor and privilege of having almost unlimited access to document this festival, on film.  The movement of this festival away from film (it was the last major film festival to screen all movies with light projected through 35mm film stock) and increasingly towards all things digital, led inevitably to my departure.

After Bill had gone through the contact sheets from the first year I photographed the festival Stella sent me a card saying that Bill wanted me to know that I photographed the festival the way he saw it.  I subsequently made more than a thousand archival paper prints of images Bill chose.  Most of those prints now reside in the permanent collection of The American Academy of Arts and Motion Picture Sciences.
